If you live in a coastal city or a region with year-round heat and humidity, you know what corrosion can do to building materials.
Rusting metal, cracked sealant, and discolored aluminum profiles are all signs of corrosion.
But some corrosion develops out of sight—inside the edge-seal of vacuum insulated glass.
- Silver Paste Is Not Always The Best Sealing Option For Vacuum Insulated Glazing
In silver-paste edge sealing, the main metallic phase in the joint is Ag₃Sn, a silver-tin intermetallic compound.
This phase is stable in dry, clean indoor conditions. However, acids, alkalis, salt spray, and high humidity can cause electrochemical corrosion of Ag₃Sn.
Corrosion starts at the joint interface and spreads inward, weakening the joint and eventually causing seal failure.
This is a serious risk for coastal buildings, industrial plants, medical cleanrooms, and other applications requiring high environmental durability.
- What SuperVIG® Uses : Silver-Free Active Solder with Built-In Corrosion Resistance
The SuperVIG® all-metal sealing process uses silver-free active solder, eliminating the electrochemical corrosion risk associated with silver alloys.
The silver-free active solder provides two layers of protection:
First, a self-forming oxide layer protects the surface.
A dense protective oxide layer forms naturally on the solder surface, preventing corrosive agents from reaching the joint interior.
Second, the alloy composition suppresses tin grain-boundary corrosion.
Specific alloying elements limit corrosion along tin grain boundaries, improving corrosion resistance at the microstructural level.
In long-term salt-spray tests, SuperVIG® all-metal joints remained far more stable than joints made with silver-containing solder.
- Reliable in Every Environment
Whether used in:
Seaside homes facing the ocean
Homes in the humid, rain-prone regions
Industrial plants with high heat and humidity
Medical facilities with strict cleanliness requirements
SuperVIG® vacuum glass with all-metal edge sealing maintains long-term seal integrity even under demanding environmental conditions.
A good window should do more than look good. SuperVIG® is built to withstand both time and harsh environments.
